Meshtastic is an open-source project that enables long-range, off-grid communication using LoRa radios. It's designed for situations where traditional networks like cellular or Wi-Fi are unavailable—such as hiking, emergency scenarios, or community mesh networks. Meshtastic unlike other radios utilizes text instead of voice. Due to it being a radio it doesn’t need cellular service, or Wi-Fi to operate. At the core of a Meshtastic device is an ESP32 microcontroller paired with a LoRa radio module, such as the SX1262 or SX1276. The ESP32 runs the Meshtastic firmware, handling all processing and communication tasks. It connects to your phone or computer via Bluetooth or USB, allowing you to send encrypted messages, configure device settings, and monitor network activity. The LoRa module handles the actual long-distance transmission, enabling each device to function as a node in a decentralized mesh network. Our altoid inserts make it easy to make your own Meshtastic radio and get to setting up your own off grid communications system.
